MMAJunkie.com is reporting that the “UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn II” middleweight scrap between Nate Marquardt and Rousimar Palhares has been moved to the main event at “UFC Fight Night 22” on September 15th.
The card’s top slot opened up this weekend when Alan Belcher Tweeted that a detached retina would force him out of his contest with Brazilian jiu jitsu ace Demian Maia.
UFC 118 takes place August 28th in Boston and UFC Fight Night 22 will go down September 15th in Texas. Although the Marquardt/Palhares bout was scheduled for the televised portion of the pay-per-view broadcast, main eventing a Spike TV broadcast could be considered a promotion.
No word on whether Maia will remain on the freebie fight card or how Octagon brass intend to fill the huge void that Marquardt and Palhares left behind.
Palhares holds a respectable 11-2 record and has rattled off three straight wins. The BJJ ace has finished eight of his wins via submission, so you know he’ll be seeking to drag the Jackson Submission trained fighter to the canvas ASAP.
Marquardt looks to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Chael Sonnen, who earned a shot at Anderson Silva’s title with his performance at UFC 109 in February. Despite the minor setback, Marquardt still owns an impressive 29-9-2 resume and remains one of the planet’s best 185-pounders.
