UFC 133 Facebook Prelims Results: Menjivar, Hendricks, Brown, and Natal Earns Wins

UFC 133 kicked off at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia with four preliminary bouts that streamed live on Facebook, as Ivan Menjivar, Johny Hendricks, Mike Brown, and Rafael Natal all earned wins.

Ivan Menjivar vs. Nick Pace

Round 1- Menjivar is the more aggressive fighter early. Pace trying to grapple but Menjivar will have none of it and we’re back to striking. Nice outside leg kick from Menjivar. Pace attempts his own with considerably less on it. Menjivar fires an errant inside legkick that leads to a break for a groin shot. Rogan takes a moment to plug the Muay Thai cup again. Pace finally takes Menjivar down and almost immediately takes Menjivar’s back. Menjivar stands and Pace attempts a rear-naked choke. Menjivar finally works free again. Round ends in the clinch. MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-9 Pace.

Round 2- Menjivar lands an inside leg kick and then an outside leg kick before clipping Pace with a punch. Pace recovers and looks for an opening against the veteran. Menjivar starts off a brutal flurry with a teep kick to a knee combo. Pace’s lack of experience in striking is showing big so far. Menjivar is landing an assortment of different kicks before grabbing a Thai plumb. Pace blocks the knees and escapes but Menjivar goes back to work with his kicks. Menjivar barely misses an axe kick. Pace finally times a kick and scores a takedown. Menjivar is in perfect position for an electric chair sweep but Pace pins Menjivar to the cage. Round ends with Pace on top. Menjivar dominated the first four minutes of the round but lost the last minute. It’s not enough for Pace as MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-9 Menjivar. (19-19)

Round 3- More big outside leg kicks from Menjivar to open the round. Pace shoots but Menjivar defends. Great combination from Menjivar as Pace looks lost while striking. Pace attempts a takedown from the clinch but Menjivar defends. Brutal body kick from Menjivar. Accidental cup check from Menjivar. Ref issues a warning and Rogan plugs another cup company. We’re back under way and Menjivar goes right back to the kicks. Pace finally starts striking back but the skill gap is evident. Pace finally lands a knee in the Thai clinch and hurts Menjivar’s eye badly. Pace misses a spinning backfist but connects with a flying knee. Menjivar’s orbital is likely shattered. Fight ends with a wicked exchange. MMAFrenzy gives the round (and the fight) to Menjivar but it could go either way. MMAFrenzy scores the fight 29-28 Menjivar but it could easily go to Pace.

Judges give the fight Ivan Menjivar 29-28, 29-28, 29-28. The fight shows the reason why you have to fight the full five each round.

Mike Pierce vs. Johny Hendricks

 Round 1- Both wrestlers trading strikes early. Hendricks utilizes a nice thai plumb and knees before Pierce escapes. Neither fighter with a clear advantage early. Hendricks striking looks much better and then Hendricks lands a takedown, go figure. Pierce escapes after taking some hard knees to the legs from Hendricks. Hendricks uses a combination starting with a knee and finishing with two hard elbows to the head of Pierce. Hendricks finishes the round with an upper cut to thai knee combo. MMA Frenzy scores the round 10-9 Hendricks in a close round.

Round 2- Pierce starts the round aggressively but is not landing much. Hendricks lands a nasty leg kick and Pierce immediately clinches. Hendricks shoots but Pierce defends with a beautiful sprawl and pins Hendricks to the cage. Mario Yamasaki restarts them in the center and Pierce immediately tries to work a front headlock before Hendricks ducks out. Pierce lands a nice combination. Hendricks lands a brutal combo at the minute mark before working a takedown. Round ends with Pierce pinned to the cage. Better round for Pierce but Hendrick’s attacks at the end kept it very close. MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-10. (20-19 Hendricks)

Round 3- Both fighters start aggressively after a touch of gloves. Pierce is loading up on his strikes which is letting Hendricks score. Half-shot from Hendricks leads to Pierce getting another front headlock. Pierce attempts a takedown but the national champion defends well. Pierce attempts another takedown and this time is successful. Hendricks does a good job of controlling Pierce’s posture from guard. Yamasaki calls an illegal upkick on Hendricks but replay shows it was a bad call. Hendricks lands another good knee after the restart. Round ends with Pierce defending a shot. MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-9 Pierce for a 29-29 draw. Last round could go either way again.

Judges see it 29-28,29-28,28-29 for Johny Hendricks.

Mike Brown vs. Nam Phan

 Round 1- Mike Brown works hard to set up a takedown before finally landing one at the 4:00 mark. Brown takes Phan’s back and begins landing punches with one hook in. The punches do not have much on them but Phan is stuck against the cage. More punches land from Brown and Phan is cut now. Brown’s punches have more on them as Phan tries to recover half guard. Brown now mixing in brutal elbows and punches in with :30 to go. Phan finally gets it back to their feet before he’s taken down again. Dominant round from Brown. MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-8 for Brown.

Round 2- Brown uses his boxing to set up a single leg attempt and the two are stuck against the cage. Phan circles out away from the cage and avoids the takedown. Phan scores with a crisp combination that makes Brown drop to a shot but Phan defends. Phan begins working the body and the head with punches before Brown tries another shot. Brown secures the takedown but Phan works free quickly. Phan’s boxing looks good in this round and it is clearly affecting Brown now. Round ends with both fighters exchanging strikes in the center. Phan recovers nicely in that round but is still behind. MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-9 Phan. (19-18 Brown)

Round 3- Phan opens the round with nice combinations. Brown responds by throwing power shots that miss their target. Brown secures a double against the cage but Phan works a standing kimura to secure an escape. Brown attempts another takedown but fails again. Phan lands another solid combination before Brown creates space with another teep kick. Minute to go and Brown pins Phan to the cage. Round ends with Brown trying to land a double. Closest round of the fight but Phan managed to land better strikes. MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-9 Phan creating a 28-28 draw.

Judges score the fight 29-27, 29-28, and 29-28 for Mike Brown. No argument here as the third could have gone either way.

Rafael Natal vs. Paul Bradley

Round 1- Failed takedown attempts by Bradley and brutal leg kicks from Natal rule the round. MMAFrenzy scores it 10-9 Natal.

Round 2- Bradley opens up guns blazing and connects on a brutal combination that wobbles Natal. Bradley rushes and takes Natal down. Natal recovers on the ground and eventually works back to his feet. More brutal leg kicks from Natal. Bradley’s leg is battered. Accidental eye poke stops the round with :40 to go. Bradley recovers and lands a nice takedown to close out the round. MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-9 Bradley (19-19)

Round 3- Natal comes out more aggressive early. Mixes more leg kicks with some teep kicks to the body. Natal shows better takedown defense in this round so far. Natal defends another shot and lands a crisp combination. Another failed shot from Bradley. Natal lands a hard left to Bradley’s jaw. Bradley looks exhausted before landing a brief takedown. Round ends with a failed takedown attempt from Bradley. MMAFrenzy scores the round 10-9 Natal. (29-28 Natal)

Judges score it 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 for Natal.
