In the co-main event of “MMA Fight Pit: Genesis” on August 13th in New Mexico, a true legend and a fighter hoping to become one will clash with their futures at stake. Jens “Lil” Evil” Pulver and Coty “Ox” Wheeler are both veterans of the WEC®, both are noted finishers, and both are looking to show that they still belong amongst the best in their 135-pound weight division. The result? Two hungry fighters ready to wow New Mexico and North American fight fans both locally and through Pay-Per-View.
“I know he’s a tough, tough fighter, and I know he has a solid fan following,” states Pulver. “I know he’s got a good fan base. He can throw punches, and he can submit guys. I’m doing everything I can to make sure I’m prepared for what he has.”
“I am HONORED to fight a legend!” exclaimed Wheeler. “I look at this to be my biggest fight, but anybody that fights Jens ‘Lil’ Evil’ Pulver considers it to be their biggest fight. I respect the guy, and I consider myself a humble fighter…but I’ve been through a lot to get where I have gotten in the fight game…but my 28 [amateur and pro] fights I have don’t mean anything now. This is why I train to fight…to fight a legend!”
Jens “Lil’ Evil” Pulver (24-15-1) is a bona fide legend whose place in MMA history is secure. The battles he’s waged in both the ring and the cage with the likes of Joe “Daddy” Stevenson, Din Thomas, John Lewis, Caol Uno, Dennis “Superman” Hallman, Takanori Gomi, Hayato “Mach” Sakurai, Urijah Faber, and B.J. Penn, who he beat for the UFC® lightweight strap, helped put the lightweight class on the map. With 19 combined appearances in the UFC®, WEC®, and PRIDE, “Lil’ Evil,” currently a member of Team Curran alongside Jeff Curran, Pat Curran, and Bart Palaszewski, is considered one of the most exciting and popular lightweight fighters of all time. He’s gone through a rough stretch in recent years, but has won two of his last three bouts, and is looking to continue his winning ways at “Genesis.” Facing a local competitor like Wheeler, Pulver knows the deck is stacked against him.
“I’m not going to be the favorite…I know that,” explains ‘Lil’ Evil.’ “But that’s alright. It’s a fight, no matter what. And I’m coming to show how much I’ve grown as a fighter in the last year.”
Standing on the other side of the cage on August 13th will be New Mexico favorite Coty “Ox” Wheeler (14-3). Another veteran of the WEC®, Wheeler has finished 13 of his 14 victims, with ten submissions, and has only been stopped once in his career. The 32 year-old “Ox” is a member of Jackson’s MMA, which is one of the top gyms in all of MMA. An Albuquerque native, Wheeler is Native American, and is known for his displays of pride in his heritage. A grappling guru, the bantamweight has bounced back after two losses in the WEC®, winning his last two bouts. At “Genesis,” “Ox” will look to get the biggest win of his career in his tilt with a legend.
“The fans should expect me and Jens to meet and bang…wherever the fight goes I’m ready to go the whole fifteen minutes of fighting,” declares “Ox.” “Jens has been around the world and is an entertaining fighter. We match up well on the entertainment level, and I’m honored to scrap with him.”
