New York again took the first steps to sanction mixed martial arts on Monday, as the state Senate voted 42-18 to approve the sport, clearing the bill to move to the state Assembly, where it has faced the most opposition in the past.
The bill was also approved by the Senate in 2010, but was never voted on by the Assembly as it worked on budget issues.
A vote in the Assembly is not currently scheduled. Should it be voted on and approved, Governor Andrew Cuomo would then need to sign it into law before the UFC and other promotions could debut in the state.
