Plenty of disgruntled fans emerged after Lyoto Machida was handed a controversial split decision loss to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 123. Ed Soares, “The Dragon’s” longtime manager, was so heated he called ‘BS’ right on the spot.
Unfortunately for the man Chael Sonnen once dubbed as a “glorified mouthpiece” for his Brazilian clientele, live cameras zoomed in as he shook hands with B.A. Baracus and told him dead to his face that the verdict was straight up “Bull [Poo Poo].”
Multiple times.
“I had no idea the camera was on us, and I was just talking to him friend to friend,” Soares told MMAFighting. “I thought it was [bull poo poo]. After the fact, I thought about it and felt bad and I apologized to him at the hotel. I thought Lyoto won the fight. He said, ‘You don’t have to apologize to me, man.’
While the in-Octagon timing of his comments drew the ire of the Rampage Nation, if the man himself doesn’t mind, then why should you? At the same time, Soares claims he and Jackson are homies from back in the day, so it kind of goes with the territory.
“I got mad love for Rampage, and I think he’s got love for me,” Soares added. “We’re friends, and I feel that’s one thing about friends is that you can be honest with each other. By no means did I mean to disrespect him on national television. I had no idea the camera was on, to be honest with you.”
One person who thought the decision didn’t smell like feces was Dana White. The UFC president quickly shot down the prospects of an immediate rematch, despite Rampage raising Machida’s hand in victory the instant the final horn blared, and flashing a deer-caught-in-the-headlights look on his face after being granted the favorable decision.
