Once upon a time, Tyson Griffin was a serious contender for the UFC lightweight title, having went 7-2 and picking up five Fight of the Night nods and a Submission of the Night award along the way.
As of late, Griffin has lost three straight, including the loss to Nik Lentz in a split-decision at UFC 123 on Saturday night. Usually, a three-fight losing streak in the UFC means that you’re going to be released by the organization. Note that I said usually.
But according to UFC president Dana White, Griffin is going to live to fight another day in the promotion. And a lot of it has to do with the judging during Saturday’s event at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Probably a good example of how Griffin may have gotten shafted during the bout with Lentz was that despite Griffin being the aggressor, he still came up short in the judges’ eyes, losing by 29-28, 27-30 and 29-28 scores.
White said that Griffin got screwed by the judges. On that account, I have to agree with Dana. And White has also gone on record to say that fighters who put on a hell of a show even with a loss will get a longer shelf life in the UFC than a fighter who dogs it for three rounds and wins a bout.
While all of this has to be good news for Griffin, he is going to have to win his next bout. A four-bout losing streak is something that White cannot stomach, even if the fighter is one Tyson Griffin.
