The UFC Just Got Bigger

The UFC Just Got Bigger

As UFC president Dana White said earlier, he had a big announcement to make. Naturally, the buzz was huge on that statement alone. As it turned out, White did not disappoint in the least.

White announced today that the UFC will absorb the WEC and add a pair of weight classes to the numerous divisions already in place. In addition, the promotion put together a new television deal with Versus to air four fights in 2011.

As a result of the absorption of the WEC, there are changes in store that have ramifications in terms of championships that would have normally taken place had the WEC continued as normal.

Some of the changes will include:

  • White confirmed that the winner of the December 16 bout between WEC champion Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis will take on the winner of the UFC 125 main event title bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. The fight serves as a lightweight title unification bout to be held next year.
  • Jose Aldo will defend his WEC title at UFC 125 in January against an opponent yet to be named. The bout will replace the recently scrapped Shane Carwin-Roy Nelson bout.

As far as the Vedrsus network television deal is concerned, the number of fights to be televised on the network will increase from 2 to 4 next year.

Versus is scheduled to air the final two fight cards of 2010 on November 11 and December 16.
