Thursday afternoon, it was announced Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will defends his crown against Michael Chandler at “Bellator 54.” The October 15th show takes place inside the Boardwalk Hall Ballroom in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Alvarez, considered by some as the best 155-pounder not competing in the UFC, looks to remain the company’s only lightweight king. He captured the crown by submitting Toby Imada in June 2009. Alvarez has won 12 of his last 13 scraps, including seven straight.
“Fighting this close to home on this big of stage is awesome,” said Alvarez. “I’ve never lost a fight in the States, and I certainly don’t plan on losing this one. I’ve never had this much time to prepare for a fight, and you’re going to see that preparation on display October 15th.”
Chandler owns a perfect 8-0 resume, with his last five coming under Bellator’s banner. Alvarez undoubtedly marks the toughest test the 25-year-old has faced thus far.
“Eddie is obviously a world class lightweight, but in a lot of the fights I have watched, no one has really pushed the pace against him,” Chandler stated. “I want to put him on his heels, and make him respond to what I’m doing in the cage. I’ve got a few months to prepare, and I’ll be more than ready for October 15th.”
No other bouts have been announced at this time.
MTV2 will broadcast the card’s main bouts.
Anna Kournikova
Hayden Panettiere
