When Alistair Overeem professed his pinky-toe wouldn’t be ready for September’s “Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Semifinals,” but it would likely be healed in time for an October outing, the chiseled 265-pounder wasn’t kidding. On Wednesday, Russian-based fight promotion Glory World Series announced their intentions of hosting an MMA/Kickboxing tournament featuring the Strikeforce champion.
Earlier this month, UFC president Dana White said Overeem was still under contract with Strikeforce, but his injury would prevent him from meeting the hard deadline Showtime set for the Heavyweight Grand Prix to resume.
According to the trusty rumor mill, Overeem has one bout remaining on his Strikeforce deal. The controversial slugger said “my current contract allows me to fight another sport,” and that’s why he was pursuing a boxing match with the Klitschko brothers.
Regardless of which combat sport would promote his next fight, Overeem was adamant over coming back in October.
Glory World Series did not announce who Overeem would face in the tourney’s opening round, or the exact date for their October show in Moscow. According to the event’s official poster, Overeem will be joined by Sergei Kharitonov, Siyar Bahadurzada and Dion Staring.
