Gabriel Gonzaga Cut by UFC Following UFC 121 Loss to Brendan Schaub

Gabriel Gonzaga Cut by UFC Following UFC 121 Loss to Brendan Schaub
Gabriel Gonzaga has been released by the UFC after the Brazilian heavyweight suffered his second-straight loss and third in four fights to Brendan Schaub at Saturday's UFC 121.

Gabriel Gonzaga has been released by the UFC after the Brazilian heavyweight suffered his second-straight loss and third in four fights to Brendan Schaub at Saturday’s UFC 121.

The move comes one day after former middleweight contender Patrick Cote was released following his own UFC 121 loss.

The high point of Gonzaga’s (11-6) UFC career came in 2007, when “Napao” scored a highlight reel head kick KO of Mirko Cro Cop to earn a shot at the heavyweight title, but went on to lose to Randy Couture before also falling to Fabricio Werdum.

After losing only to Shane Carwin in his next 4 fights, Gonzaga lost to contender Junior dos Santos in March before dropping a unanimous decision to Schaub on the UFC 121 main card.

In announcing his release on Twitter, Gonzaga wrote that he’ll go ‘back to normal life’.

Strikeforce Open to Co-Promoting Superfights with Bellator

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker

After watching Zuffa, LLC, the parent company of the UFC and WEC, merge their two business units, Bellator Fighting Championships CEO Bjorn Rebney immediately started lobbying Strikeforce head honcho Scott Coker to arrange some co-promoted MMA action.

During Thursday’s Bellator 34 post-fight press conference, Rebney pushed for a blockbuster bout between his lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez and Strikeforce king Gilbert Melendez. Rebney claimed to have sent Coker a “dozen different text messages and voicemail messages” since October 21st.

If that’s the case, Rebney needs to contact Mr. Telephone Man because there’s something wrong with his line.

“Bjorn’s saying he’s texting me 11, 12 times an hour. I’m not sure if he’s trying to be a level-five clinger or anything like that, but I haven’t received one text from the guy,” Coker told Sherdog.com. “I’m not sure what the motivation is, but maybe it’s just his way of staying in the media, staying in the press.”

While they haven’t communicated directly regarding a potential co-promoted show, it is something Coker would be interested in. However, the stars must align (no pun intended).

“It’s something that Bjorn has chosen to take up publicly and come after us,” Coker told HDNet in this week’s new edition of Inside MMA. “We’re not opposed to the fight, but the circumstances and the timing have to be right. Gilbert is going to be scheduled most likely to go to Japan, so timing will be an issue.

“[That being said], if Bjorn wants to do a business deal, he should call me directly.”

Rebney is also pushing for his champions Hector Lombard and Ben Askren to face their Strikeforce counterparts – Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Nick Diaz, respectively.

WEC’s Biggest Superstars Speak Out on UFC Merger

WEC’s Biggest Superstars Speak Out on UFC Merger

WEC Lightweight Champ Ben Henderson

Did you hear that ruckus on Thursday? Don’t be scared, homie. It was only the collective fracas of WEC superstars doing Yes Cartwheels after UFC president Dana White announced they would absorb their little brothers to formulate one powerhouse organization.

In addition to the added exposure and automatic promotion, White also acknowledged former blue-caged fighters should be getting pay raises now that they have “made it” to the big leagues.

The money train doesn’t stop there, as athletes appearing in UFC shows – particularly on the televised portion of a fight card – command heftier sponsorship dollars than when competing for other companies.

Here’s what your favorite WEC superstars had to say about the monumental maneuver (Courtesy of Sherdog.com):

WEC/UFC(b) lightweight top contender Anthony Pettis:

“It’s crazy. It’s not even real yet, and it’s not going to be real until it finally happens. I’ve heard the rumors for a year-and-a-half. The possibility of headlining a pay-per-view is huge.”

WEC/UFC(b) lightweight champion Ben Henderson:

“I’m not so affected by the pay-per-view stuff. No matter the venue, I still have to go out there and perform and get my hand raised. I could be fighting in the back of a 7-11, and I still have to go out and do my best.

“It would mean a lot [to become the UFC champion]. It’d be a dream come true. I want to be the best on the planet, so I’ll probably eventually fight both [Edgar and Maynard]. I want to beat everybody – not my buddies, but everybody else.”

Former WEC bantamweight champ Miguel Torres:

“It’s definitely bittersweet, because I’ve been with the WEC a while, and I’ve been fighting since ’98. I think I’m a pioneer, but now the future is open to me. I think it’s really good. It’s going to give us lighter guys more attention. We’ve sort of been viewed as second-tier fighters and now we’ve got the opportunity to show the world that we belong in the UFC.”

Former WEC poster boy and featherweight king Urijah Faber:

“I’m excited, man. I’ve been pushing for [the merger] for a while now. We WEC guys haven’t been getting the credit or the exposure that we deserve. It’s also going to mean better paydays, which is obviously great.

“Not having to explain the difference, or lack of a difference, to the fans is going to be nice. I’m looking forward to the satisfaction of there finally being no difference between the UFC and the WEC. I didn’t think there was a difference before, except the initials, but now it’s official.”

99′ers video: too young to retire and too old to rehire

99′ers video: too young to retire and too old to rehire

I watched this 60 Minutes show and felt they were really focusing more on the reality for many people in America. They said a line that most of these people are too young to retire and too old to rehire. Watch the first segment and tell me if this is more accurate than what most news media outlets  shows.  This was a good episode.

Don’t forget in the last 10 years from Bush to Obama, the economy has sank and the deficit has risen, but the people who benefited the most were the top 10% wealthy, the  friends of these politicians, and the banksters.

Black Friday laptop deals

Black Friday laptop deals

Halloween has not passed yet, but I am thinking about the Black Friday sales around the corner. I have been checking out all the laptops out there and it seems like there are a ton of sales. The prices are really good and it seems like retailers are out in force to move inventory.

There are plenty of basic laptops in the low $300 range from Walmart, Staples, and Office Depot. Black Friday might bring the $199 laptop like last year at Walmart. The netbooks are even cheaper in the low $200 range. Of course the tablets like the ipad start at $499 if that is what you want.  I think I will purchase a new laptop after the new year and will sell the computers I have now to pay for them.

After all the prices of laptops always goes down in time and the technology continues to get better.  I have watched laptops with I3 core laptops on ebay in the $400 range and I5 core laptops in the $500 range which are surprisingly cheap. Who knows maybe these will be the $300 laptops after the new year.

I made a lot of mistakes, but at least I learned from it with Martin before I fight for a title shot. Definitely I plan on learning from the mistakes and coming back a lot stronger,” Shields recently told Sherdog. “It’s just a matter of getting my weight down a little more so I don’t go out there and look like crap in a title fight.

“The way I fought the other night, I don’t feel like I would have won a title that night. But I do feel like it’s something I’m capable of doing. I just felt like I wasn’t myself that night. I’m not that happy with my performance overall, but I am happy I won. I’m ready to move forward and have a better second fight in the UFC.”

American Express fighting Department of Justice lawsuit

American Express fighting Department of Justice lawsuit

A couple of years ago I blogged about my personal experience with American Express and the credit card limit reduction.  I really posted it just to vent.  Since then that has been one of my most popular posts and has the most comments on this blog.  I think it is really cool for people to share their experience with a quick post.

Then a few weeks ago, the Department of Justice decided to sue American Express.  Since then this is the only news item on the amex fighting a lawsuit.  My prediction will be Amex will settle with the DOJ in the future without admitting guilt.  Pretty much like all the other banksters that are caught.

DebtAmerica:

Credit card issuers American Express, Visa and MasterCard face uncertain futures after the U.S. Justice Department brought forth lawsuits that accused them of violating antitrust laws, according to the Bedford Report. Visa and MasterCard both opted to settle the lawsuits, which were related to the fees they charged to merchants for every credit card transaction they processed. Now, retailers can offer lower prices to consumers who opt to pay for a purchase without taking on credit card debt.

However, American Express, which makes more from any transaction involving credit card debt than other issuers, has decided to fight the lawsuit, throwing even more doubt over what will become of its policies, the report said. If AmEx were to lose the lawsuit, it’s not clear how their new policies would affect consumers.

Prior to the suits, merchants had protested these interchange fees for months, saying that they cost them thousands of dollars a year, even for smaller businesses

Jose Aldo Added to UFC 125 on Jan. 1, Henderson-Pettis Winner Earns UFC Title Shot

Jose Aldo Added to UFC 125 on Jan. 1, Henderson-Pettis Winner Earns UFC Title Shot
Jose Aldo will defend the UFC featherweight title for the first time at UFC 125 on New Year's Day. The winner of December's WEC 53 main event between WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis will face the winner of the UFC 125 main event between UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard to unify the titles.

Jose AldoJose Aldo will defend the UFC featherweight title for the first time at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day, UFC President Dana White confirmed on Thursday after announcing that World Extreme Cagefighting will merge with the UFC in January.

Aldo is expected to defend the title against Mark Hominick or Josh Grispi, who faces Erik Koch at WEC 52, but his opponent hasn’t been decided.

White also announced that the winner of December’s WEC 53 main event between WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis will face the winner of the UFC 125 main event between UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard to unify the titles.

Team Fedor Emelianenko: “Brock Lesnar is a Pure Product of the UFC”

Team Fedor Emelianenko: “Brock Lesnar is a Pure Product of the UFC”

Strikeforce M1 Global Heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko

After hearing the entire MMA world come down on Fedor Emelianenko after his upset loss to Fabricio Werdum, it’s now M-1 Global figurehead Vadim Finkelchtein’s turn to fling insults at the man most believed had surpassed his golden boy in the heavyweight hierarchy.

If critics thought Emelianenko’s credentials were questionable because he’s never called the Octagon home, then Vadim professes Brock Lesnar is straight up fugazy after getting annihilated by Cain Velasquez last weekend at UFC 121.

“I have long said that Lesnar is more of a product of UFC’s PR rather than a serious fighter and that fight clearly confirmed it,” Finkelchtein told AllBox.com (translated by Yahoo!). “I do not want to say that Lesnar is a nobody, but he has very little experience.

“What does he have, six fights in MMA? He’s a pure product of the UFC, who met a real fighter and he lost.”

While Fedor’s outspoken manager was quick to diss the former WWE superstar’s resume, he also didn’t hesitate to give the newly minted king props on his overall skills.

“In my opinion, he is a very good fighter. Capable and strong,” Finkelchtein said of Velasquez. “The UFC can now present him as the best in the world, and it is certainly debatable, but he’s really a fighter. Not a product of PR.”

Whatever is going on UFC-side shouldn’t be of concern to Finkelchtein, particularly since they haven’t been able to iron out a contract extension with Strikeforce. Emelianenko has one fight remaining on his current deal with the San Jose, California based promotion. Both parties – as well as Showtime – have been negotiating for several months to no avail.

Two weeks ago, Team Fedor claimed they would move forward with or without a new agreement in place. To the surprise of nobody, the soft deadline came and went and Emelianenko’s impending free agency status is still in limbo. Either way, don’t expect to see the world’s former/current top heavyweight inside an Octagon anytime soon.

“Now we are in active negotiations with Showtime on a contract extension, and perhaps we will renew it, but the UFC does not offer such opportunities and imposes its monopoly conditions,” Vaidim added. “They believe that everyone should be in the UFC.

“We would love to fight with Lesnar, and Velasquez and all, but why should we give up all these undertakings, all the years spent on Fedor’s development will go to them? Fedor did not grow in the UFC, right? So why should he go to the UFC?”

I can’t stop checking out the new technology coming out in laptops and tablets and hybrid laptop/tablets.  I enjoy using my ipod touch capabilities, but typing on it is really a challenge.  With my laptop it is a breeze.  That is why even though tablets are the latest craze, I don’t think it would really serve my needs.  I like to blog, surf the net, and watch movies.

Watching the apple ipad and all the other tablets or slates coming out made me want to get one, but my enthusiasm for these gadgets isn’t really sustained.  When I bought a netbook, I thought it would be convenient to carry around but after 6 months of use, I went back to using my big laptop.  The netbook has weak cpu’s that make them super slow which takes the pleasure of using it away for me.   Also, the keyboard was so small, that typing fast is very inaccurate for me.  At first I rationalized that it would take time to get used to the slow down, but in the end I realized I should have ...
