UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is recovering faster than expected from recent knee surgery and could meet top contender and former title-holder Rashad Evans at the UFC’s Super Bowl weekend event in February after originally being targeted for a March return.
“Off the top of my head, I think of the Superbowl card in February, but this is something that could change depending on his recovery schedule and the UFC’s business schedule,” Rua’s manager, Eduardo Alonso, recently told Sherdog. “But the way things are going right now, I can tell you that he’ll be ready sooner than expected.”
Rua (19-4) scored a first-round knockout of title-holder Lyoto Machida in May to avenge a controversial October decision loss, but suffered a torn ACL in the bout, postponing a matchup with Evans, who earned a title shot with a May win over rival Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
