KJ NoonsFresh off his successful Strikeforce debut, KJ Noons will likely battle fellow lightweight Jorge Gurgel at Strikeforce’s August 21 event that is expected to take place in Houston, according to MMAWeekly.

After ending a 21-month layoff with a unanimous decision over Andre Amade in DREAM in March, Noons (9-2) returned to action in the US for the first time in more than two years, as he earned a split decision over Conor Huen in a three-round war at last Wednesday’s “Strikeforce: Los Angeles“.

Gurgel (13-6) has gone 1-1 in Strikeforce since being released by the UFC in 2008, debuting last June with a unanimous decision over Huen before dropping a decision to Billy Evangelista in his most-recent fight in November.

The Strikeforce: Houston fight card is expected to feature the first title defense for light heavyweight champ Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, and may also include the opening round of a tournament to crown Strikeforce’s new middleweight champion assuming current title-holder Jake Shields leaves for the UFC as expected.
