The long-awaited rematch between welterweight contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves is finally official for UFC 117, as the UFC today announced that the anticipated matchup will be the co-main event of the August 7 pay-per-view card in Oakland, California.
After being postponed from December’s UFC 107 and March’s UFC 111, Alves was recently cleared to return after undergoing brain surgery and the pair finally signed for the long-rumored bout.
Alves (16-6) rebounded from a second-round TKO loss to Fitch in 2006 with a seven fight win streak over the likes of Josh Koscheck and Matt Hughes before falling to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre last July, while Fitch (22-3) has earned four-straight unanimous decision wins since losing to St-Pierre in 2008.
UFC 117 is headlined by middleweight champ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen and also features Roy Nelson vs. Junior dos Santos and Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida.
