Although it wasn’t the main event that was scheduled to headline “UFC on Versus 4,” Cheick Kongo and Pat Barry put on a thrilling show, nonetheless. Despite enjoying a significant reach advantage, it was Kongo that ate an overhand right and was put in severe danger.
Barry immediately pounced on him and unleashed one bomb after another. It appeared as though referee Dan Miragliotta was preparing to stop the heavyweight affair, but Kongo miraculously gathered his wits and threw a right upper-cut that instantly dropped his overzealous opponent.
Kongo followed up with a couple of strikes on the ground that put Barry completely to sleep at 2:39 in the opening round.
“It was perfect,” Kongo said of his lights out shot. “I had to win this fight. I’m really happy.”
The victory was Kongo’s first since a unanimous decision over Paul Buentello in March 2010. He posted a draw against Travis Browne at UFC 120 and has been recovering from a horrific back injury since the controversial fight.
“UFC on Versus 4: Kongo vs. Barry” took place Saturday night inside the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
