With UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones sidelined by a hand injury, the UFC has booked a matchup between former title-holder Rashad Evans and fellow contender Phil Davis for UFC 133 in August, the promotion announced Monday.
Jones (13-1) reportedly tore a ligament in his right hand and a timetable for his return is unknown. “Bones” is just one month removed from dethroning champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 to complete his quick rise to the top of the 205-pound division.
Evans (15-1-1) was expected to fight Jones in September or October over a year after beating rival Quinton “Rampage” Jackson to earn a title shot last May, while Davis (9-0) was planning to take some time off after topping Antonio Rogerio Nogueira on short notice last month to remain unbeaten.
UFC 133 is expected to take place Aug. 6 in Philadelphia and the UFC 133 fight card also features Vitor Belfort vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama and Rich Franklin vs. Rogerio Nogueira.
