Royce Gracie may have been crying all the livelong day for a rematch against Matt Hughes, but it appears the world’s biggest MMA show opted to go another route. It was announced Thursday Hughes will face Diego Sanchez sometime this fall.
“A matchup between two welterweight fan favorites has been verbally agreed to as Diego ‘The Dream’ Sanchez will face former UFC welterweight champion and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes,” said UFC president Dana White. “Sanchez is coming off of a Fight of Night winning performance against Martin Kampmann and Hughes is looking to add another great victory to his incredible UFC career.”
Hughes owns an extensive 45-8 resume, with 35 of his victories coming via finish. The 37-year-old was quickly put down by BJ Penn at UFC 123 this past November.
Sanchez holds an impressive 23-4 professional record, with his last 16 scraps coming from inside the Octagon. “The Ultimate Fighter 1″ winner was last seen taking a controversial unanimous decision win over Martin Kampmann at “UFC on Versus 3.”
Although the UFC announced their critical welterweight matchup, a specific date or venue has yet to be determined.
