UFC 116 Play-by-Play

KURT PELLEGRINO VS. GEORGE SOTIROPOULOS

Round 1 – Sotiropoulos connects with a straight right early, then counters a leg kick with a combination. Sotiropoulos continues to fire punches, eventually dropping Pellegrino and following him to the ground. Sotiropoulos looks to take his back, but Pellegrino escapes to his feet. Pellegrino struggles to get much off as Sotiropoulos continues to fire punches, but does score a takedown only to have Sotiropoulos quickly stand. Pellegrino finally connects, then Sotiropoulos lands a knee. Sotiropoulos with more punches, then Pellegrino gets a takedown but Sotiropoulos is in control with elbows from the bottom. Pellegrino escapes for a few punches as the round ends. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round for Sotiropoulos 10-9.

Round 2 – Pellegrino and Sotiropoulos walk to the center of the cage and trade punches. Sotiropoulos grabs a leg and works to score a takedown. Pellegrino keeps Sotiropoulos under control momentarily, but he eventually gets free and passes to half guard. Sotiropoulos rains down elbows, but Pellegrino scrambles to the cage. Sotiropoulos passes to side control, then looks to take the back of Pellegrino, who works back to his feet. Sotiropoulos presses for another takedown, but Pellegrino manages to stay standing. Pellegrino misses with a knee as they separate from the clinch. Sotiropoulos lands a head kick, and Pellegrino follows it up with a solid knee to finish the round. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round for Sotiropoulos 10-9, putting him up 20-18.

Round 3 – Pellegrino tries to connect with punches, but Sotiropoulos continues to win the exchanges. Sotiropoulos has Pellegrino backing away as he connects with more punches, but Pellegrino scores a takedown. Pellegrino looks to ground and pound, but Sotiropoulos does a good job limiting his damage. Pellegrino breaks free to connect with some solid elbows. Sotiropoulos traps Pellegrino, but he breaks free and they return to their feet. Sotiropoulos stuffs a takedown and presses Pellegrino against the fence in the clinch. Pellegrino drops Sotiropoulos with a knee in the final seconds, but the round ends. MMAFrenzy.com scores the third round 10-10, and we’ve got Sotiropoulos winning the bout 30-28.

KRZYSZTOF SOSZYNSKI VS. STEPHAN BONNAR

Round 1 – Bonnar goes for takedown. Soszynski finally drops the hold and they return to their feet. Soszynski connects with punches that bloody Bonnar before clinching against the fence. Bonnar connects with a combination as they separate. They trade leg kicks in the center of the Octagon, then Bonnar stalks Soszynski, who catches a kick but abandons a takedown. Bonnar clinches Soszynski against the cage and unloads a wild combination, which allows Soszynski to back away. Bonnar connects again before Soszynski returns to the clinch. Bonnar looks for a takedown, but Soszynski grabs a guillotine then lands a punch when they separate.

Round 2 – Bonnar slips and Soszynski capitalizes with an early flurry, but Bonnar quickly counters with punches against the fence. Soszynski reverses and connects with more punches of their own before they separate. Soszynki connects again before returning to the clinch, where Bonnar scores a takedown into side control. Soszynski scrambles back to his feet, but Bonnar drops him with a knee in the clinch. Bonnar jumps on Soszynski and rains down punches until the referee stops the fight.
