Strikeforce Challengers 16 took place on Friday night at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington and every fight on the Showtime televised card went to a decision, but tonight proved that not to always be a bad thing.

Caros Fodor vs. James Terry

In the main event of the evening, Caros Fodor and James Terry battled in a high-energy bout. Fodor kept constant pressure on Terry from start to finish. Terry’s best offense came when he was able to gain mount late in the third but it was not enough to win the fight. Fodor landed early and often on Terry and that proved to be the decisive point in the bout as Fodor notched the unanimous decision victory. Fodor is now riding a four-fight winstreak in the promotion and will likely be facing a step up in competition after tonight.

Matt Ricehouse vs. Ryan Couture

In the co-main event, Matt Ricehouse defeated Ryan Couture. While Ricehouse was largely forgotten in the days leading up to the fight his experience showed up in a big way against Couture. It was a close fight that was largely decided in the center of the cage as Ricehouse’s striking edge proved too much. Couture showed flashes of his father with his clinch work and dirty boxing but was unable to get in rhythm and used up a lot of energy with wasted movement. Ricehouse improves to 5-0 while Couture drops to 2-1 after tonight.

Lorenz Larkin vs. Gian Villante

After a slow start, Lorenz Larkin put on an entertaining striking display against Gian Villante. Villante dominated the first round by using strong wrestling to ground the striker. Larkin would rebound and went on the offensive in the second and third rounds tagging Villante with strikes than came from everywhere. At the end of the second round, Larkin landed a switch kick that even Villante felt the need to acknowledge as impressive. Despite the pleading of his corner, Villante was never able to let his hands go. The Serra product was noticeably more hesitant to strike with the faster Larkin after the first and when he did throw it was to little or no effect.

Jason High vs. Quinn Mulhern

Jason High put on a takedown clinic en route to a unanimous decision victory over Quinn Mulhern. Mulhern was unable to stop the former wrestler from taking him down despite a definitive height and reach advantage. Mulhern was able to keep High from pounding him out by utilizing an active guard that often forced High to sacrifice position to avoid submissions. Despite the active guard, it was Mulhern’s lack of takedown defense that doomed him as High took him down at will. High was disappointed that he was not able to show off his hands more in the fight but did what he had to do to win the fight.

Julia Budd vs. Germaine de Randamie

Julia Budd and Germaine de Randamie kicked off the card Friday night with Budd coming away with the win. Budd, who had previously lost to de Randamie in a Muay Thai bout, was able to control the Dutch fighter on the ground for the majority of the bout. De Randamie’s inexpierience on the ground showed up as she often held on to submission attempts that she had little chance of finishing. De Randamie did show flashes of brilliant striking however when she was able to stop Budd’s shots. Budd admited after the fight that her gameplan, while effective, was not the most entertaining style. Budd improved to 2-1 while de Randamie dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
