Fabricio Werdum expects to challenge Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem when he returns in March, with a planned rematch against Fedor Emelianenko on hold while the former top-ranked heavyweight continues to work on a contract extension.
Fabricio Werdum recently told Cage Potato that he expects to challenge Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem when he returns in March, with a planned rematch against Fedor Emelianenko on hold while the former top-ranked heavyweight continues to work on a contract extension.
Werdum (14-4-1) upset Emelianenko with a 69-second submission in June for his third-straight win, but hasn’t fought since after undergoing elbow surgery and had hoped for a tune-up fight before returning to Strikeforce action.
Overeem (33-11) is unbeaten in nine-straight bouts, including a May title defense over Brett Rogers, and will return to kickboxing action in K-1′s World Grand Prix in Tokyo on Dec. 11.
