It appears not everyone got what they wanted this Christmas. According to reports, lightweights Jamie Varner and Chris Horodecki received lumps of coal instead of UFC contracts this Holiday Season.
Varner actually fought in the UFC prior to making the move to the WEC. The explosive striker captured the 155-pound title by defeating former champ Rob McCullough at WEC 32.
After eating an unintentional knee from Donald Cerrone at WEC 38, fans unexpectedly turned on Varner when it was determined he couldn’t continue the championship affair. The Arizona native took home a technical split decision that evening, much to the dismay of ticket payers inside the arena.
He ended his Zuffa run with two straight losses, a unanimous decision defeat to Cerrone in their rematch at WEC 51 and just suffered a submission loss in the World Extreme Cagefighting’s swan song earlier this month.
Horodecki, on the other hand, had won two consecutive before being submitted at WEC 53. He put together an unimpressive 2-2 record while fighting under the WEC banner. At one point, Horodecki was one of the hottest 155-pounders not in the UFC when he was running through all the IFL had to offer. The youngster won his first 12 professional scraps.
The Canadian confirmed his release with MMAJunkie Tuesday afternoon, while MMAWeekly broke the news regarding Varner’s dismissal.
With the barrage of lightweight talent the UFC now has access to, courtesy of their monumental merger this past October, the stakes have never been higher for the 155-pounders. The release of a former WEC champ and up-and-coming 23-year-old is proof of that.
