Tethering on android phones

Tethering on android phones

When I first started looking at smart phones,  I checked out blackberries because they had the tether capability with a paid app.  I liked the idea of being able to create your own personal wifi location.  At the time, that was the only smart phone Virgin Mobile was offering until this year.

Once I heard about the new android phones that were coming out I decided to wait.  I knew you could do the tethering on the Samsung Intercept either by rooting or buying a tether application, but the reviews I read and watched were all kind of iffy.

Finally the LG Optimus V came out and I saw many users able to tether without purchasing a new app or rooting the phone.  After doing some research, I have come to the conclusion it is built in to the android operating system 2.2 aka Froyo.  It wasn’t really the phone itself that made this possible.  At this point, if you have an android phone that can run the 2.2 o/s Froyo update, then you should be able to tether.  All you have to do is download a free app called quick settings.

Basically, from this point on, I would imagine that all new android phones with the 2.2 o/s and up will be able to tether.  As long as you have an unlimited data plan like the Virgin Mobile beyond talk plan it should be cheap at the low price of only $25 a month which includes 300 minutes and unlimited texting, too.
