Alistair OvereemStrikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem has reportedly been released by Strikeforce. Details are scarce at the moment, but HDNet reported Friday that Overeem’s camp received notice he was released from the organization effective July 22.

The now-former champion recently withdrew from the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix due to lingering injuries that were apparently more severe than first thought. While it was originally believed Overeem would still return to the organization, the Dutch fighter is now a free agent.

Overeem’s camp had been in negotiations with Strikeforce and Zuffa, the UFC’s parent company, to extend his deal beyond his one remaining fight but it appears that negotiations have broken down for now. During that time it appears the relationship grew strained as Overeem spoke of a possible move to boxing and appeared very frustrated with his now former employers in a recent interview with MMAFighting.com.

Overeem’s next destination, at least for now, will be Moscow, Russia for the Glory World Series in October. No date or opponent has been announced as of now. Meanwhile, Strikeforce’s grand prix will continue on September 10 featuring Overeem’s replacement Daniel Cormier vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Josh Barnett vs. Sergei Khaitonov. The winner of the tournament could conceivably be crowned Strikeforce’s new heavyweight champion.
