Up until a month ago, I had a regular cell phone and used it only for emergencies. I have used virgin mobile the last 5 years and tracfone for the previous 5 years. Both were good service phones for me and when I did need to use them, they worked fine. Tracfone offered a phone plus a one year card with 400 minutes when I used to have them and that really fit my needs at the time.
What I used to have was the basic cell phone that did one thing only. And that is simply to make calls from the car in case I get a flat tire or run out of gas. You can buy a cell phone for less than $10 on amazon with a top up card of $20 for every 90 days. I believe you can still set up “top up by paypal” for $15 every 3 months and pay only for the minutes you use.
Of course there is a ton of choices out there depending on your needs. I created a carousel of cheap virgin mobile, tracfone, and net10 phones that you can buy online with no credit checks, no contracts, or security deposits. The lowest ones are $10 as listed above. Hope that helps you out if you are looking for a simple and affordable phone for emergencies.
