1999 World Champion wrestler Yoel Romero Palacio, who also finished with a silver medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics, moved to 3-0 in his mixed martial arts career with a dominant first round finish against Nikita Petrovs at a Superior Fighting Championship event in Germany. Don’t you wish you had gone to your favorite online betting site and placed money on Palacio?
Romero, a 5’10”, 205-pound bull of a fighter, has now finished all three of his opponents, and he is looking to come to America later this year to make his debut in the United States. During his first two fights, Romero dominated Sascha Weinpolter (10-3) by TKO in the first 48 seconds and finished Michal Fijalka (7-2) by TKO in the 3rd round, proving that a more experienced record is no match for this beast.
“My goal is to fight the top middle and light heavyweight fighters in the world and they fight in the U.S.,” said Romero. “I’ve proved I’m one of the best wrestler’s in world and I’m going to prove that I’m the best 185/205 pounder MMA fighter.”
A native Cuban, Romero recently signed with ML Management, who also represents Strikeforce Lightweight Contender Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal, top world ranked flyweight Alexis Vila, T.U.F. alumni Rich Attonito, & former ADCC Champion Jeff Monson among others. After becoming one of the most dominant wrestlers in the 85kg freestyle category around the turn of the century, Romero has used his powerful boxing early in his MMA career easily dominating his opponents.
“Romero is a force to be reckoned with; just no one knows it yet,” said Tina Vidal from ML Management. “He has all the skill and heart of Alexis Vila with an extra fifty pounds of power. His performance will not disappoint.”
With his younger brother Yoel Pablo Hernandez, WBA Cruiserweight Interim World Champion, in his corner, Romero is planning to continue to develop as both a boxer and mixed martial artist.
Romero was also named as one of the best upcoming light heavyweight prospects by BloodyElbow.com.
Here is a recap of the fight from the Dutch MMA website Ground and Pound:
Palacio started things off with a jumping high kick followed by a superman punch. He hit Petrovs with a hard leg kick, but then he missed with another high kick. Petrovs tried to go on the offensive and scored with an inside low kick and a body kick. Palacio just looked at him and shrugged his shoulders, as if he wanted to say, “Why do you even bother?”
Then Palacio decided it was time to wrestle. He put Petrovs on his back with a hugedouble leg takedown and immediately went to mount position. Palacio tried to ground and pound Petrovs, but he rolled on his stomach and gave up his back. Petrovs lost his mouth piece in the process. When the referee handed it to him and asked him to put it back in, Petrovs shook his head and told him that he’s done. No mas. A very unsatisfying ending to a fight that could’ve had a great knockout finish.
